CHRIS McCAW
Chris McCaw (né en 1971 à Daly City, Californie) est un photographe qui s'attache à distiller la relation intrinsèque entre la photographie et le soleil. Expérimentant la photographie depuis l'enfance, l'artiste est fasciné par le médium sous toutes ses formes, travaillant dès son plus jeune âge à documenter les scènes californiennes du skateboard, des zines et du punk au milieu des années 1980. Tout en poursuivant ses études, il tombe amoureux de la simplicité des appareils photo grand format, expérimente vigoureusement divers procédés d'impression et commence à fabriquer ses propres appareils photo en 1995.
Naviguant entre figuration et abstraction, Chris McCaw s'est efforcé de capturer avec précision notre place dans un paysage cosmique en mouvement, tout en utilisant les lignes graphiques et les points brûlés par le soleil dans des compositions abstraites. L'artiste équipe ses appareils photo grand format d'objectifs puissants généralement utilisés pour la surveillance militaire. Au lieu d'une pellicule, McCaw insère directement dans l'appareil photo du papier photo gélatino-argentique à base de fibres périmées. En pointant l'objectif vers le soleil, Chris McCaw réalise des enregistrements allant de trente secondes à 84 heures. Le soleil, intensifié par l'objectif, brûle le papier tout en créant une image solarisée du paysage ou de la mer qui se trouve en dessous - une image "positive directe" réalisée à l'intérieur de l'appareil photo, sans négatif intermédiaire. Cherchant à prolonger la durée de ses photographies, Chris McCaw a effectué quatre voyages au cercle polaire arctique en été, lorsque le soleil ne se couche jamais, pour documenter le "soleil de minuit". Dans l'ensemble de son travail, ces lignes brûlées et ces trous sont des traces tangibles de l'acte de faire chaque photographie : marquer le temps, enregistrer l'emplacement, cartographier les conditions météorologiques et canaliser la lumière.
Chris McCaw a exposé ses œuvres dans des institutions telles que la National Gallery of Art (Washington D.C.), le Los Angeles County Museum of Art, l'Art Institute of Chicago, le Museum of Fine Arts of Boston et le Rijksmuseum (Amsterdam, Pays-Bas). Ses œuvres font partie des collections du Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York), du J. Paul Getty Museum (Los Angeles), du San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, du Whitney Museum of American Art (New York), du Chrysler Art Museum (Norfolk), du Philadelphia Museum of Art, de la National Gallery of Art (Washington D.C.), du Smithsonian American Art Museum (Washington D.C.), du Victoria & Albert Museum (Londres, Royaume-Uni) et de bien d'autres encore. L’artiste a reçu de nombreuses récompenses, notamment la New Works Grant et l'Alternative Exposure Grant de la Fondation Andy Warhol, ainsi que le prix Emerging Icon in Photography de la George Eastman House. Il vit et travaille à Pacifica, en Californie.
